In February of 2020, only 25% of the students I taught were online language learners, mostly from outside the US. I worked with all of these learners via Skype. I taught my other private students in small classes, Meetup groups, and college classes in person. March 13, 2020, was the last time I worked with a student in person and my online learning experiment began.

Would my business model survive Covid 19?

My business, as I had run it for the last 20 years, came to a screeching halt. As a result, I worried a lot, beginning my days insanely early and starting each day full of stress. I wondered whether the company I had built would survive using an exclusively online learning format.

What could I do to move my learning online?

Initially, I devoted extra time to marketing and implementing new online learning ideas as my students slowly transitioned. Next, I learned how to use Zoom. I started working online more often with individual students, then began classes of five online learners, a first for me! Finally, this week, I taught a class of over 30 students online!

How successful was I?

Student improvement and outcomes through online learning have been the same, or in some cases better, than in-person learning . Using an HD camera and a crystal clear headset with a mic, I can video record classes for my students, and share screens with online learners.  As a result, students enjoy very close and better views of how to make sounds than in in-person classes.

Additionally, I offer monthly classes for both English Communication and Accent Modification.

I’m working in ways in a world I never thought imaginable. I know I’m lucky and grateful to have this opportunity, one that many don’t. So far, 2020 has been a great success. It turns out it’s been the best year my business has ever had, despite not having stepped into the office.

Thanks to anyone and everyone who helped me along the way, including all my online learning students who supported this transition. I know two things now: things will never be the same and they will always change.
